DIY Gel Polish with Sally Hansen Salon Gel Polish Starter Kit

Today I have guest blog from a dear friend of mine - Stef. She is as much of a beauty lover as I am and we have enabled each other to a countless number of beauty purchases! One of Stef's great love is getting her hands manicured and today, she shares with us a review and tutorial of her latest nail haulage.

I’ve always loved finishing up my gym workout session with a manicure session at a local salon. And ever since I found out about gel nail polishes, I was hooked! I love that it dries instantly and doesn't chip; is still glossy and shiny even after 2 weeks. For me, gel polishes are the best things since sliced bread because I can still wash dirty dishes (I don't use gloves) and not have to worry about my nail colours fading or chipping!

But each gel polish manicure costs $35-$40 - do I really want to spend that amount every 2 weeks - especially when I realise that I could probably do it myself (though probably not as well as the salon manicurists, but practice makes perfect right?).

So when I found the Sally Hansen Salon Gel Polish Starter Kit, it was Hallelujah! I ordered my kit from eBay, which was the best way to source the product from the US to Australia.

The kit contains:

• 1 base coat 1 colour coat in “Wine Not” 
• 1 top coat (I love the glossiness of this coat) 
• 10 cleanser pads 
• 1 nail buffer 
• 1 gel polish remover 
• the LED lamp

The application is really simple:

1. You apply a very thin coat of  the base coat. This is important! If you apply a layer of slob, it won't set properly. Trust me - I've been there before :( 
2. Then you cure it for 30 seconds under the LED lamp.
   
   
3. Apply the colour coat thinly. Depending on the colour intensity that you want, you can either apply one or two coats of colour. 
4. In a single coat, “Wine Not” looks like a bright red with shimmer. In two coats, the red looks a bit deeper, sexier, and richer. Cure it under the LED lamp for 30 seconds with each coat.
   
   
5. After curing the colour coat, apply the top coat thinly; cure it under the LED lamp for another 30 seconds. This is my favourite part. As soon as you layer that top coat, it lifted up the whole polish to show this glamorous glossy colour. 
6. Use the cleanser pad provided to rub over the nail colours to remove the tacky residue from your nail polish. 
7. The last step is to apply the CND Solar Oil - a sweet almond oil base cuticle oil. Brush a good amount on your cuticles and gently brush it in with your finger. Not only is it nourishing to cuticles, it also helps the nail polish to stay on longer. 
   
8.  I purchased another gel polish last week: CND Shellac in “Hollywood”. Below is the comparison of the two colours. My nails are polished in “Wine Not” - 2 coats and my toe nails in “Hollywood” - 1 coat.

The Verdict:

I think this at-home Gel Polish kits make a good investment and Sally Hansen has come up with a value-for-money kit. However, I find that their gel polish are not as long-lasting as those from the CND Shellac range. So, once my current Sally Hansen gel polish runs out, I'll be getting CND Shellac or Harmony Gelish gel polish replacements.

Freshen Up with Seed Heritage Emerald Nails

When Tine from Beautyholics Anonyomous tweeted a photo of her nail colour last month, I was instantly in love and asked her to pick one a bottle for me.

The nail polish of affection here is from Seed - a retail store founded in Melbournea 12 years ago. They have a small cosmetic range and this particular nail polish shade was on sale at a bargain of $7.95.

Seed Heritage Nail Varnish - Emerald

Let me start by saying that this even more pretty in real life than the photos suggest the shade to be.
And the name is very deceptive as well because it isn't an emerald coloured, but a rich sea-green or fresh teal shade - reminding me of mermaids and tropical lagoons.

Deceiving name aside, the colour is a gorgeous and bright - instantly cheering me up when I have it on. It contains micro-pearl (not very visible when dried) so doesn't look flat and dries to a satin finish (which I finish with a top-coat to get the glossy shiny look).

The formula is very forgiving and non-streaky, making it a breeze to apply. The bonus is that it dries quickly with 1 coat giving you a vibrant opaque colour and 2 a richer deeper hue.

I'm also happy to report that it lasts, withstanding 4 days' worth of wear without chipping and only slight fading in the edges.

Paired with a black or dark coloured top or dress, teal coloured nails definitely adds an extra touch and makes the perfect statement nails to accesorise with.

Date-worthy Nails with Sally Hansen Honeymoon Red

Having been faced with this very dilemma this weekend, I resorted to the fail-safe shade that one wears when coveting alluring and desirable nails – a trusty deep ruby that never fails to impress.

The high shine fine shimmer means that the nails polish goes on smoothly and is very easy to apply and I can go 2 days without tip fade (3 coats). With a top coat, I can almost get a whole week of wear before it needs to be taken off . The only shade I had some trouble with application was Calyso Gold as it's the lightest shade, 3 coats were needed to get a even streakfree finish (all the other shades except Another Daiquiri Please & Bright Lights, Pink City are 2 coats in the swatches).

Daimond Nails with Sally Hansen

If you are like me and likes using your nails as tools to pry open things in your daily life then it's little wonder that no nail lacquers (other than shellacs and UV gel nail colours) survive for long on my fingers.

Usually within a day, even with the best of lacquer formulas, I'll experience tip wear (where the colour at the edge of the nail is fades off). The quality of the lacquer determines the extent it of the tip wear in a day. Then a few days later, the nail colour will normally lift on the edge and chip or lift off even with a protective top coat on.

Recently, I tried out some nail products from Sally Hansens and have to say for my rough treatment of my hands, its stands up quite well to fading and chipping (actually I did not experience any chipping at all).

Sally Hansen Insta-Grip Fast Dry Base Coat, Diamond Strength No-Chip Nail Colour & Diamond Flash Fast Dry Top Coat

The Insta- Grip base coat is quick drying and creates a slightly non-smooth surface on the nail bed for the colour to stick to and also prevents yellowing of nail beds while strengthening it. The only thing I did notice is that if applied too thickly, the colour can peel after a couple of days with this base coat on, so be sure to paint it on as thinly as possible to avoid this issue.

The selection of growing shades from the Diamond Strength No-Chip nail color with diamond particles for long wear range from the wearable pastels to the contemporary and modern with an easy to apply fluid formula and brush.

The shade I have on in the picture is #220 Champagne Toast, a pastel pink with fine iridescent shimmer and a pearl finish. It is a soft pretty shade that is easy to co-ordinate clothing and accessories with. 3 coats were needed on this shade to get a more opaque finish.

Diamond Stength No Chip Nail in Champagne Toast with Diamond Flash top coat

The Diamond Strength Diamond Flash top coat featuring grounded diamond particles is one of my favourite nail finishing product as not only does it creates a mirror-like shine to nails, is is quick-drying (60 secs touch dry) and prolongs the intensity and wear of nail colours by doubling its life on my nails. That means that I get about 4 days of wear without tip fade and over a week wear without chipping.

The nail colour lasts even longer when I re-apply the top coat every 2nd day to further protect it from fading and to give it an instant boost in shine.

Sally Hansen has come to my rescue and I can now make any of my manicures last over a week with the help of some of its clever products. Now I just need to make the nail lacquers dry faster so I don't accidently smudge them when they are touch dry but not completely set yet.

NOTD: Zoya Adina

I've been giving my nails a breather from any colour and it’s been 3 weeks since I had a coat of polish on them (truth be told, I’ve been far too pre-occupied with other activities to do weekly manicures). But today, this beautiful polish has lured me back to lacquer world.

Orly Nail Lacquer - Sweet Peacock

Sweet peacock is a royal blue with a metallic shimmer finish. It's a gorgoeous vibrant shade and gives nail plenty of dimension.

The shimmery finish does indeed remind me of the irridescent blue in the eyes of the peacock feathers and I love it paired with a pale blue shirt to highlight the vibrant colour.

The Shimmer finish lacquer is easy to apply and I found thicker layers gave less streaky finishes from uneven layerig of the shimmers. You really you can get away with one coat for an opaque finish if it was applied thicker than normal but if you were going for a second coat, make sure the first is completely dry as it's easy to disturb the first layer of this shimmer formula and result in an uneven finish.

NOTD: Australis Nail Colour in Bombshell

Yay it's the weekends! I hope everyone has time to enjoy some sunshine and warm weather this weekend!

Given weekends should to be a relaxing, I thought I'd share with you a bright and cheering nail post today.

Australis Nail Colour in Bombshell -10ml

I won this limited edition nail polish in a twitter competition a while back and haven't tried it till recently. And now that I have, I wonder why I haven't any sooner as it's a beautiful shade

Bombshell is the mother of all barbie hot pinks. It's neon, bright and loudly proclaims 'look at me'.

When I put this on, Elle Woods from Legally blond instantly came to mind. Yes - she would definitely approve of this shade. Paired with white clothes and this cool bright pink will guarantee that your digits stand out a mile away.

Bombshell is very easy to apply, non-streaking and becomes opaque in two coats. It did take a bit of time to dry completely as I applied thicker coats than usual and when they did eventually dry, you get a beautiful even high shine creme finish that glistens in the sun.

Overall, Australis's formula appears to be pretty good. On me (I'm very rough with my hands and don't wear gloves for any chores), the colour provided average wear and lasted 2 days before starting to chip on the nail edge but I didn't experience any peeling with this lacquer.

Given this is limited edition and if you want some Elle Woods in your life, I'd be dashing to the stores to pick this right up to add to your collection.

NOTD: Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Taint

Illamasqua has just released a new collection this week in time for the northern Autum/Winter season known as the Theatre of the Nameless that draws inspirations from the riotious and pleasure seeking scenes during the nocturnal underworld subcultures during 1920s in Berlin (this sort of reminds me of Underbelly Razor show with the working girl references).

I'll talk more about the launch another time on but for now, I just want to show you the nail varnish from the collection that is both opulent and exuding in confidence.

Illamasqua Nail Varnish: Taint

Taint is a cool stone brown shade. In some lights it looks like a deep grey brown. I was initially unsure of the shade, especially in the bottle, thinking it might be too muddy on fingers but boy was I wrong.

This shade is rich and broody and being a strong opaque shade, it exudes strength, confidence and edginess. Yes - I will admit to quite liking it on my nails.

It's also boasts a chip resistance formula that is quick drying and streak free for very easy application, even for clumsy people like me who have difficulties at times with getting even finishes.

Taint dries to a beautiful satin matte finish that is described as having a rubber finish which feels flat and smooth, one of the best matte finishes I've tried as they can sometimes feel 'rough'.

This deceptive shade has completely won me over and is a great colour with denim or for the cooler months and even though it's now Spring in Australia, Melbourne is in the grips of a cold front this week.

Molten Metallics Nail Enamels by Face of Australia

The latest limited edition range from Face of Australia is the highly anticipated Molten Metallics nail enamels.

The range has 8 colours - 4 of them run with a metallic chrome finish whilst the other 4 run in metallic-fine shimmer finish. The names are beautiful and describe the shade perfectly so you don't have to go guessing the colours.

Dazzling and beautiful, I'm partial to the micro-shimmer finishes but love all the shades in this range. The quality is on par with more mid-range lines in terms of ease of application and lasting powers.

I'm surprised and impressed by Natio's lip colour hydrating formulas that leaves lips soft and moisturised. They glides on relatively easily and lasts a couple of hours before re-application is required to freshen up the colour. Both these shades are very wearable shades. 

Baby berry, a soft berry plum colour that is more a satin finish with a sheerer coverage.

Velvet Berry, a deeper berry shade with a semi-matte finish that gives a fuller coverage as it is more pigmented.

High gloss formula, these polishes were quick drying and very smooth and easy to apply. They are fairly chip resistant too which makes them even more awesome! 

Berry You is a deep cherry red – I love vampy shades in cooler months and this one is a classic stunner.

Very Berry is a dark plum purple – 2 coats and it’s almost purple black. A very edgy shade for those who like their digits dark.

Eye Liner - RRP A$14.95 for 3.5ml 

Midnight Berry is a navy black liquid liner with a felt tip pen. 

I find that felt tips don’t work too well on my eye shape as I need many strokes to draw the line across my eyes and the felt tip can make the liquid become streaky going over it too mulitiple times. But once I get it right, the sharp tip does give precise application and when the liquid dries, the colour is pretty much smudge proof and stays all day with minimal fading by late afternoon.

Super Long Lash Mascara in Black – RRP A$14.95 for 10ml

Gives clump free sculpted lashes that are lengthened and defined perfectly. It isn’t the most volumising mascara but if lengthening and lifting power is what you want and need, then this is one mascara you need to check out.
