Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquers

Rimmel recently launched the latest lip offerings into the market called Apocalips. 

I was initially thinking this would could be another hybrid lipstick-stain product(al la L’Oreal Shine Caresse) but it is in fact a new category in its own right. This is a new breed of lip lacquers/glosses that are highly pigmented and creamy in texture, as you would find in traditional lipsticks but with the shine that is often seen in lacquer glosses. Lets check out the official wordings first shall we? 

Rimmel Says:

Combines the intense colour of lipstick with a lacquer like shine, Apocalips lacquers are packed with pure colour pigments; its lusciously creamy, conditioning formula promises a never-before combination of colour, shine and comfort that lasts and lasts.

My Views: 

Lightweight and wearing comfortably, it feels very emollient on lips without a hint of tackiness or stickiness  and the high shine also helps to create a plumping effect for those with thin lips. 

It conditions like a lip balm, helps to prevent lips from drying but will show up chapped lips so conditioning lips and exfoliating them is a must (try a dry toothbrush after showering when the flaky lips are softened).

The colours range from subtle nudes to bright and vibrant shades so there’s bound to be a shade that suits all occasions. One swipe of the brighter shades and you have full coverage on your lips – something i’m very impressed with.  What’s better is that you can layer these lacquers so you can mix two Apocalips together to form your own custom shade as well as dial up or down the brightness of the colours.

Packaged in a doe-foot sponge applicator, it spreads the formula easily and can even be used to create defined lines when tilted on its side which makes touching up on the go easy-as. It has a tasteless but distinctive apple peel scent which is quite unique as well.

My only complaints are that some of the creme shades without any micro shimmer to add dimension can make lips look flat ‘painted on’ (which also could be an effect you are going after as well but isn't flattering for everyday wear). Good thing is that this can easily be resolved with layering of shades to create one that sits better on your skin.  

Lasting-power wise, the nude colours survived about 1 hr of wear before fading and disappears even faster when eating but the brighter shades lasts 2-3 hours and still holds its colour through light eating. 

The Colours

100 Phenomenon
A pale pink nude that looks best on fair skin and those with cool skin tones for a very natural my lips but better look. Those with pigmented lips like myself with have some difficulty pulling off the look with this shade as it’s washes out the lips too much. 

600 Nude Eclipse
A brown based nude pink that works much better on warmer skintones and also sits better with pigmented lips. This would be the ‘my nude lips’ look if you have medium or warm skintones – then this shade is for you. I love wearing this on my lazy weekend days where i like a bit of hydration but am not going for colour.

701 Stargazer

Full of golden micro-shimmer, Stargazer is very sheer and on my lips, I can barely see the colour other than the shiny shimmer from different angles. I think this shades works best when layered over other lip products to bring some golden warmth and sparkle to the colour. 

201 Solstice 

This is a dusky rose shade that would suit all skintones. The presences of shimmer adds a dimension to lips and just makes this an even more exquisite shade on my skin. This is one of my top picks  of the Apocalips collection.

101 Celestial  

This is a warm dusty pink with a creme finish. It differs from Solstice in that it's a brighter version of the shade and it doesn't contain shimmer is produces a nice block colour effect for lips.

102 Nova
This is a cool Barbie-resque mauvy pink that would wear better on those with cool and light colour skintones.

501 Stellar 
This is a warm and vibrant cherry red that just pops and brightens up lips and goes well with all skintones. In bright white lights, it even has a slight orange tint to it. I love wearing this on my no-eye makeup days because all attention goes to my lips.

303 Apocaliptic 
A rich berry pink, this signature shade that just accentuates the pouts and again would suit all skin tones. It's definitely another bright colour so make sure you co-ordinate your blush with warm berry colours when wearing this shade.

Personally, I love the texture and comfortable wear of Apocalips. My top picks from the current eight shade offering would have to be Solstice, Stellar, Apocaliptic and Stargazer for layering. These lacquers are even better value when on sale (as often can be found at the Chemist Warehouse) for up to 50% off.

L'Oreal Shine Caresse & YSL Glossy Stain Comparison

Whenever a successful product is launched into the market, it generally isn't long before others try to emulate its success by coming up out with similar products (think the plethora of BB creams we now see in the market). Sometimes it’s even the same company who come out with similar/competing product to cater for a different demographic/segment of the market.

Such would appear to be the case with today’s product review. L’Oreal is the parent company for both L’Oreal Paris and YSL but have different target market; one being more drugstore or budget friendly and the other caters to the high-end prestige market - but undoubtedly they would share many R&D findings and outcomes between both companies and their products would contain similar formulations which would be tweaked enough to provide differentiating factors to justify the two separate markets.

So with the success of YSL Glossy Stains since its 2012 launch, it wasn’t long before a more budget friendly version of the product was brought to the market by L’Oreal to fill the gap. This is how I think L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse lip gloss/stain came to existence.

I couldn’t help myself the other day when there was a 40% off sale in Priceline and picked up a couple of shades to try out and do a comparison with my much loved Glossy Stains (reviewed and swatched here).

L'Oreal Paris Shine Caresse - 6ml 

This hybrid gloss/stain is marketed as:
"The next generation lip colour, that combines the texture & shine of a gloss with the long wear of a stain. Delivering a lasting colour with a subtle glossy shine". 

It’s touted to contain a unique formulation with 30% water and 60% oil, that delivers real hydration for up to 6 hours after application. To me it sounds very similar to the Glossy Stain.

Packaging –  this comes in a clear tube showing the shade of the product and has a gold base and a tapered gold applicator lid. Initially I thought the base was the lid, but it was the tapered end that holds the tear-drop applicator.

Scent – it has a sweet sugary scent that reminds me of cotton candy at a carnival. Love it or hate it, it goes away after a few minutes on lips

Texture, finish & formulation – Shine Caresse feels feather-light and goes on lips with a watery feel and a vinyl gloss finish. The shine wears out to a subtle sheen after a few hours of wear but is still very flattering. The formulation can gives slightly patchy application of the colour as it doesn't always spread evenly, so may require a second coat to get an even opaque coverage. It is initially hydrating but on me, it does feel a bit sticky/tacky as time goes by and the only way to avoid this is to not layer on the product and rather slick on a lip balm for added hydration afterwards.

Colour -  a decent amount of pigmentation is present in the deeper shades but it can be a bit patchy on application for the lighter shades with its lower pigmentation levels. An extra coat of product is required to achieve good even coverage. As with stain products, the initial colour oxidises and deepens over the first 2 minutes of wear. But once developed it stays true and wears for hours and hours on end. I had #300 and that lasted me more than 6 hours of wear (it did fade to a lighter stain after eating).

Lasting power -  lasts through food without smudging. In fact, this is the stand out feature of Shine Caresse, along with its lightweight formulation which gave very comfortable all day wear (save for the slight sticky feel at times).

Colours 
#200 Princess is a coral red on my medium pigmented lips. I find the colour goes it slightly patchy and my natural lip colour shows through slightly (especially at the edge). It is a very pretty shade that compliments all skintones, particularly warm and medium skins.

#300 Juliet is an oranged based red when swatched on skin but a deep red on my lips and in certain light (especially after the colour develops), it looks like a deep bruised berry colour. It is definitely one of the most changing shades I've encountered in a while which goes to show some shades are just unpredictable on individual lips.

The most visually obvious similarity for me between the two products is in the sponge tip applicator - the slight difference in shape doesn't detract from the fact that they are fundamentally teardrop shaped. The initially watery feel, the light-weight texture and likeness in shine finish is also quite uncanny.

As predicted, Glossy Stain and Shine Caress can pass off as siblings as the main ingredients are the same for both products. But this is where the parallels starts to end. The difference are in the trailing ingredients gives Glossy Stain (pigment and fragrance being a main difference) the advantage in pigmentation and comfort during wear.

Glossy Stain shades doesn't change colour as much during its development stage so what you see in the tube colour is more representative of its end shade. It is also much more pigmented, especially so for the lighter shades where one coat is enough for a decent colour payoff whilst with Shine Caresse, its sheerness means multiple coats to achieve the same level coverage.

Scent wise, Shine Caresse comes across as being more synthetic but I don’t mind it at all. In short, Glossy Stain wears better, doesn’t feel sticky after long hours of wear and has more sophisticated colours selections.

Obviously the price points between the two products are also very different. Shine Caresse is less than half the price of Glossy Stain in Australia so you can buy two for the price of one.

The price difference makes L’Oreal Shine Caresse an excellent alternative for many and I have to agree. But my lips are quite snobby and whenever possible, I’d take the YSL Glossy Stain for a bold shot of colour and only supplement with the Shine Caresse when I want to wear sheerer lip shades.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain - Swatches and Review

Being prone to dry lips, I prefer my lip products to be of the hydrating variety but I love intense colours as well. So when YSL released their hybrid technology Glossy Stains last year – it just met all my lip needs.

This new generation of hybrid lipstick/gloss/stain technology with amazing wear just captivated me. I know there are countless reviews of the products already out in the web, but I’ll just add in my two cents today and explain why I love them so much!

YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain

YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain is marketed as:
"a technological breakthrough, a must-have with an exceptional hold. Fresh and light, the texture does not run, streak or fade. Lips show off a new kind of shine, they are infused with show off a new kind of shine, they are infused with colour. The pleasure is reinforced by an extraordinary feeling of comfort."

Glossy Stain is packaged in a bold black plastic rectangular tube with a clear window on the panel to indicate the shade of the product with a gold applicator lid on top and a red embossed YSL logo.Overall, it feels weighty, practical, sturdy and looks classy – all things you would expect from a high end product and from YSL albeit not as luxurious as their other lip product packaging (hello Rouge Volupte Shine!).

The applicator itself has a tapered flatten tear-drop shaped sponge tip, which works very well for depositing the product on lips brushing out to cover and blend, and when turned on the side, the brush does a great job of defining the edges of the lip.

The formula is the stand-out factor of the product. It has a faint and pleasant rose/floral scent when applied to lip, feels initially watery with a bit of slip, giving it that smooth and moisturising feeling without any sticky or tackiness. Texture wise, it feels feather-light on lips . I actually feel like I’ve applied a conditioning lip balm rather than a siren screaming lip colour. It doesn’t give a glassy gloss finish but the mid-shine finish and really adds moisture to any dry lips.

Glossy Stains also delivers the most amazing shot of colour, gliding easily on application to provides sheer (one coat) to complete coverage on my medium pigmented lips, something I rarely see with gloss products and would only get with lip stains and lipsticks.

Not only is the initial colour intense, the staying power is amazing. Once applied on lips, this stuff lasts through all day of normal wear, even with eating and drinking without much fading at all (which easily equates to 4-6 hrs if I had to give a number). Seriously, the gloss factor may wear off but the colour survives through the whole lunch or dinner course. Of course, it isn’t as intense as first application, but it’s still respectably presentable as a lip stain and sometimes I don’t try to re-apply the colour, preferring to slick on a tinted lip balm to get a lighter shade of wear after.

Ever since my first YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain last year, I've been hooked. I started my collection  with the siren red shade #9 and have slowly been working my way through the brighter colours in the collection. Today I have 4 shades to swatch for you.

#9 Rouge Lacque is a true siren red with a cool undertone. It instantly glams and brightens up the face with its richness and intensity. Probably not for the faint hearted but definitely a starring shade for an evening out.

#12 Corail Fauve is a coral shade with a pink undertone in one coat and becomes more a coral red shade with 2 coats.

#14 Fuchsia Dore is a deep fushia with micro gold shimmer. On my lips, its looks a deep mauve shade and intensifies over time to be cool berry mauve that I adore for evenings.

#25 Fucshia Neo-Classic on my lips, it looks a rich fushia pink with warm berry base on my lips. Is is probably my favourite of the shades as it complements warm skin tones very well.

For my daily wear, I prep my lips with a lip balm (currently using Kiehl’s Lip Balm SPF 15), then lightly pencil in a nude lip pencil shade (to boost lasting power and act as a primer) before applying the Glossy Stain.

To me, these Glossy Stains are what technology can do to beauty products, bringing together all the best qualities of products in one. I can’t bang on enough of them and they are and will continue to be a staple in my makeup rotation. Although pricey, they are definitely worth their it and I’ve yet to find a good enough dupe, even in the L’Oreal Shine Caresse which I blog about here.

Almost a Hit: Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipsticks

Lipstick technology have come a long way these days – you don’t have to spend a fortune or look too hard for one that not only gives good pigmentation but also comfortable wear. In fact, even drugstore brands are coming out with fantastic products.

The latest is from Revlon with their Colorstay Ultimate Suede lipstick (although in Australia, their pricing doesn't really sit in the drugstore price point like they do in the USA at only US$7.99!)

Revlons’ Description:
A one-step, ultra comfortable lipstick that provides all day colour, giving lips a velvety, suede finish that looks and feels good.

My View:
Packaged in plastic colour-coded bullets with clear lids, they twist up and down and you can hear clicks as you get to towards the base products to let you know you can stop the twisting.

These lipstick are indeed comfortable on the lips, being lightweight, you barely feel that you've applied a layer of product on skin, gliding smoothly on lips. I didn't feel that they were hydrating lips (it has Shea butter, aloe and vitamin E) but they were not drying and will accentuate chapped lips to remember to prep with a lip conditioner if you have dry lips.

Pigmentation is also very good, obviously not as colour-packed as those of high end products but a couple of swipes and full opaque colour can be achieved, even on my deeper lips (note: the shades I tried are darker shades, so the lighter shades may not show up as well on darker lips).

The formula has a satin (semi-matte) finish rather than the namesake suede finish and is tacky on lips. This is my one big gripe about the product. I love everything about it except the tackiness, which seems to get worse the longer you wear the product. I overcome this by slicking a non-sticky clear gloss on top, which changes the semi-matte finish but at least removes the sticky feeling and gives it added hydration.

Tip: Another way to reduce the tacky feeling is to apply a very thin layer of the product onto lips and use a lip brush to define the edges and fill in any gaps that didn't get colour with the product already on lips.

As for longevity, these easily last 4 hours straight without smudging or fading. It even fares well through eating, lose some pigment, but enough remains (at least on the richer shades anyway) that you still have colour on your lips. You usually would re-apply your lipstick after eating anyway to avoid the coloured-ring look (where there is no colour in the middle of lips) so lasting over 4 hours was more than enough for me.

095 Finale –  the little sister of siren screaming red shades, Finale is a rich fresh red that brightens the face and perfect for daytime wear as it’s not too dark but still packs a powerful colour punch.

005 Muse – a rich pink with a blue undertone that looks lovely on cool tone skin but equally alluring on warm skin tones.

075 Cruise Collection – a mid coral red shade on my medium lips. This is by far one of my favourite shades in lip colours and suites all skin tones, especially warmer skin colours

Overall, I quite like these new lipsticks from Revlon. I enjoy the light formula, good pigmentation and good colour selection. Except for the tacky feeling that gets worse over time, they could have almost been the perfect lipstick.

Aussie Violent lips for Twenty 20

A bunch of guys are from work are heading to the twenty 20 match this Friday evening. There's going to be flags, T-shirts, banners from Australia and India flying wild in the office and at the MCG grounds. I thought I'd do something different to show my support (even if I could care less about cricket) and sport a statement lip with Violent Lips flag-inspired lip tattoo.

These are temporary lip tattoos that are lightweight to wear and don't dry out lips and so fun to wear for special occasions.  They come in sticker-like paper and you start by tearing the out at the perforation and cutting them to match your lip size using the guides at the back to work out how much to cut off. 

Tips on applying and wearing violent lips

• Measure and cut them to size, cut a bit off at a time as you can trim more but can't add back if you over trim. 
• You can carefully trim the top of lip and the bottom of the lower lip applique to make it more contoured to your natural lip line but again, cut a little at a time. 
• Don't get these babies wet before taking the clear backing is off - otherwise the paper backing will fall off and the tattoo is stuck to the clear side, meaning you will not be able to apply your lip tattoos and will have to start over with a new one. 
• Excessive widening of lips will stretch the tattoo and cause 'cracks' so that your natural lip colour will show through. Minimise this by avoid opening your mouth too wide during talking or eating. 
• Although it doesn't dry out lips, the tattoo feels tight on lips so make sure to slick on a clear lipgloss to keep lips mositurised and to prevent it from cracking. 
• Violent lips survives through drinking ok but I wouldn't recommend to eat with it as I found that the wear greatly diminishes after that. These will last 2-3 hours quite nicely before the 'cracks' shows too much but you can get away with more than 4 hours wear before it starts to look messy if you don't eat.

Review: Natio Lip Treatment w UV Filters

Do you have lips that are in a constant state of dry, cracked mess crying for some TLC? We know the solution to that is to hydrate them with lip balms, glosses and regular exfoliation, but what's the best products to deliver these results and give you soft supple pouts?

I'm always in search for better products to rescue my super-duper dry lips, which are exposed to the crazy Melbourne weather and the daily air conditioning at work.  I have to exfoliate my poor pouts every day while showering because of the dry flaky skin but this makes them slightly raw afterwards and I need rich nourishing products to nurse them back to suppleness and not so bee-stung looking (sorry - overly fat lips do not look good on anyone other than Angelina Jolie, and lets leave it at that).

I find lip balms do an okay job but wanted to amp up the treatment factor and looked around and found this local Aussie goody.

Natio Lip Treatment with UV filters

You may not realise but your lips can get burnt after prolonged exposure in the sun, giving rise to more flaky lips which could lead to dis-colourations along the edges of lips or worse - abnormal growths that transforms to nasty things cancer on, so sun-protection on lips is a MUST like every other part of your body. 
• Does have a slight tingling feeling upon initial application from the menthol - I'm not sure I like the sensation but I'm willing to put up with it for all the other goodness it provides me. 
• Great hygienic squeeze-out tube applicator. No wand applicators that could contaminate products by dipping back into product after on-going use. 
• Tip: make sure you keep your hydration levels up during the day by drinking plenty of water to keep your puckers smooth. Whenever I don't drink enough, I definitely feel my lips going downhill faster than usual. 

I always reach for this lip treatment when my lips are chapped or cracked and need extra TLC. Believe it or not, I think this stuff is better on my lips than Lucas Papaw ointment and I love that for everything.  I keep one in my handbag, another at home and a third at my desk to make sure I always have access to it.

What lip treatments have you tried for super dry lips that flake every day? I'm keen to try other products that I may not have come across that do just as well and doesn't have the menthol tingling sensation.

Review: Bloom Lip Duo

If you're like me you'll always be rummaging through the handbag to find the lipstick or lip gloss during the day for touch ups because you just can't seem to find anything whenever you need it. Worse, you'll find the gloss but the lipstick is nowhere to be seen.

Bloom's Natalie must have heard me cursing one too many times and has answered my prayers by coming up with an ingenious multi-function product.

How they Performed
Lipstick:

• Creamy and hydrating with medium buildable coverage.
• Applies silky smooth on lips with a satin finish with pearliness noticeable only in the full sunlight.
• Easily lasts for 3 hours before needing any touch ups.

Lipgloss:

• Brilliant shine with micro shimmer that gives lips a plumping 3D effect - perfect for that sultry pout!
• smooth non-tacky formula that's not too sticky - it's not exactly boyfriend friendly yet (they tend to hate glosses with passion) but your hair won't hate your lips as much when the wind sweeps it across your face.
• provided a sheer hint of colour when worn alone and added depth and richness to colour when layered over matching lipstick.

Forgive and Forget is soft and wistful - great for pretty feminine looks paired with a hint of peach blush and soft neutral eyes while You & Me will give a slightly more bold look that goes well with smokey eyes.
I cannot pick a favourite between the two and would probably love the rest of the line too.

Available in 6 wonderful irresistible shades with cute names like Rain & Puddles and Moon & Stars - they all looks and sound so good I want them all. I am glad I didn't write off Bloom just because I had a bad experience with one of its product (b Collection nail lacquers) as I would definitely go out and buy these lip duos.
